Hi there!

I’m Brett.

This is a blog about how I’m building my life. It’s a collection of essays, each one sharing a small part of my story and outlining one brick in the life that I’m trying to build. One essay might be an accent piece, a small detail in one of the rooms I’ve built. Another might be a heavy block, deep in the unseen foundation that supports and guides everything else.

Wait, what’s all this talk of bricks?

My “Builder’s” Approach to Life

Building your life is kind of like building a house.

The invisible foundation might be the most important part. Skip that part and you’re a foolish builder. Once that’s in place, though, you can put up a structure, and only then should you start thinking about the details.

Foundation first. Then structure. Then details.

Covered Topics

At a foundational level, we’ll hit everything we shouldn’t talk about at a dinner party. God, meaning, the big questions, and thinking well. We’re going to get meta. But we won’t stop at theory.

At a structural level, I’ll share how I’m building out my life on this foundation. That means practical spirituality, health, relationships, personal finance, technology, travel, habits and productivity. And to flesh it out even further…

At a detail level, I’ll share the actions and protocols I use to get the most out of life. I’ll write about things like spiritual practice how-to’s or a specific mutual fund you should be investing in. I’ll give out my exact green smoothie recipe and let you know when there’s a credit card signup bonus that can get you to Europe.

You can tune in for the big questions or just the little details. But my hope for myself and you, dear reader, is an intentional life, from the ground up.

A bit more on me.

I’m from a small town in northern Minnesota. After high school, I moved to the big city to study Electrical Engineering and Philosophy. During this formative time I became a committed Christian, graduated, got a job in IT, dove into real estate investing, married an awesome gal, and had three kids in just over two years(!)

This blog is about the lessons I’ve learned along the way and what I’m still trying to figure out.
